Request for "Brainstorming Exercise" ideas
Hey all,

My posts usually aren't of the "help!" variety, but I could use some input...

For my class this Thursday, I want to do some sort of group exercise to demonstrate the value of brainstorming. I have about 20 students and 45 minutes to an hour for this particular activity.

Any advice? Suggestions? A lot of the stuff I've found so far is just of the "find fifty other uses for a teabag!" variety.

Thanks ;)

try to get them to draft important and foolproof legislation? protecting gay marriage without letting those silly poly people in, protecting the rights of family in all meanings of the word...
or an issue of their choice.
draft a new bill of rights or mini-constitution?

of course there's always how to get a tennis ball out of a very tall tube that can't be flipped upside down...

playing charades...

There's always the option of you bringing in a semi-random photograph and having them list possible explanations for what's going on in it.

One book I like for random writing topics and brainstormy stuff is "The Pocket Muse." It's a smallish green hardback with a black cloth spine, found in the writing section of B&N, etc. Ah, here it is:
The Pocket Muse.

Good luck!

Good exercise in both brainstorming and perception. Have a few object in bags, like styrofome cup, straw, paperclips, etc..each in its own bag. Separate class into groups and have them all look in their own bag, but not show anyone what they have. Just the group knows.

Have them put a description/commercial together to advertise the great, revolutionary product without giving it away. Can't say its a cup or anything like that.

It stretches the imagination when someone talked about a great piece of equipment that was waterproof, required no power (environmentally friendly), could hold 10 times its weight, durable between -20F and 100F, is the ultimate portable, and will not break if dropped. Complete with option of personalized logo. It was a styrofome cup.
