[10 Jul 2009|11:25am] |
Hey Everyone, So I just went out and bought the Conduit for the Wii. And, so far I'm pretty pleased with it. The graphics arent amazing but its a Wii game so what can I expect. Im actually stuck at the level of the Jefferson Memorial, I keep getting killed. Anyone have this game that knows how to get past where Im at? Thanks, Tyler

| Question concerning preparing for graduate school |
[09 Jul 2009|10:29am] |
I would like to work in an academic library in a position that uses technology heavily. I am considering getting an associate's in computer and information systems before entering a MLIS program to acquire a strong technology background. My local community college offers an associate's with a programming concentration and one with a networking technology concentration. Which do you think would be more useful for a library setting? Here are the courses for each specialty (they all have the same foundational courses):
Programming:
BUS 241 Principles of Accounting I | 3 | BUS 242 Principles of Accounting II | 3 | CIS 147 Advanced Microcomputer Applications | 3 | CIS 222 Database Management Systems | 3 | CIS 278 Operating Systems | 3 | CIS 251 C++ Programming | 3 | CIS Programming Electives (can include CIS 198, CIS 244, CIS 255, CIS 261 CIS 282) | 9 | CIS 281 Systems Analysis | 3 | CIS 288 Networking | 3 | CIS Advanced Programming Electives (can include CIS 213, CIS 252, CIS 262, CIS 293, CIS 299) | 9 | CIS 212 Visual BASIC | 3 |
Networking (Web technology sub-field):
CIS 147 Advanced Microcomputer Applications | 3 | CIS 151 Graphics for the World Wide Web ORCIS 197DD Flash OR CIS 197EE Fireworks | 3 | CIS 197GG Web Page Scripting (Perl) | 3 | CIS 207 Introduction to Web Development | 3 | CIS 208 Intermediate Web Development OR CIS 197CC Dreamweaver OR OAD 233 Trends of Office Technology | 3 | CIS 209 Advanced Web Development | 3 | CIS 255 Java Programming | 3 | CIS 273 Introduction to Networking Communication | 3 |

| Infomercials... |

I just love how infomercials take advantage of the fact that people can't perform basic math functions.
Just today I saw an infomercial about healthcare where they were trying to make their heath plan sound like a good deal. It's only $6 a day, they boast...
Umm $6 a day is $180 a month (in a 30 day month). Explain to me how THAT is a good deal. If you are a healthy individual (read male and between the ages of 18-35 with no preexisting conditions) you can get health insurance for as little as $80 a month. If you are a woman, expect to pay more like $100-$110 (women between the ages of 18-40 get hit harder because we're "fertile and having babies" during these years-- so we cost more 9_9 ).
Sure they said they'd take people with preexisting conditions... and they claim they cover all kinds of things...
This is WHY they are charging $180 a month. You're paying for all those sick asses and pregnant women who are eating up all the benefits.
I also like when they try to sell you a product and offer to let you have a 30-day trail for $14.95... They neglect to tell you that the actual product really costs over $100 if you agree to keep it. Often they do not say that outright-- not even on the TV fine print-- you need to be smart enough to go investigate that for yourself.
It just amuses me that they take advantage of the collective stupidity of the general population to make their sales. Because if they said outright "this product or service will cost you over $100 a month" no one would order it!
It's just a clever mind game they play. Retail does the same thing with prices... that's why everything ends in ".99"
$19.99 looks "cheaper" than "$20" and it technically IS cheaper even if it's by a negligible amount. If you pay $99.99 instead of $100 you're tricked into thinking you're getting some kind of deal because it's under $100.
I just love how you can sell any old crap if people think they got some kind of bargain...
And if you throw in something for free, that always sweetens the deal, even if it's something you really don't want.
I usually don't like the free item thing... it's just one more thing for me to throw away 9_9 I'm especially not a fan of the free t-shirt... I hate t-shirts with random writing on it. I don't like being someone's personal bulletin board. The weird thing is I think I'm in a minority in that department, I know tons of people who are suckers for the free t-shit. I don't mind wearing a t-shirt if it advertises something I actually like... but I really don't need one that says "Buy your grapes from Bill Bob's grapes 'n more!" I mean really? Why would I want that?
I guess preying on the stupidity of your average person is just part of the whole merchant strategy... clearly it must work well.

Ok, no matter whether you are a die hard Christian or not, this is freakin'... hilarious.
I got this from MenageA3's forum ( NSFW webcomic (duh)).
This video IS safe, though, although you might get some odd looks.
Hahaha!

| Naruto and the mortgage crisis (No, really) |

I was reading an update on the Naruto manga and it reminded me of the whole mortgage and foreclosure situation. In the latest story arc, Pain (bigass evil dude) apparently goes all Godzilla on the village, killing tons of people including a shitload of main characters. Tsundae (who happens to be the leader of the village) goes out and fights him but even with her abilities, gets smacked around and it's only because of her amazing recovery powers that she doesn't die and is instead rendered comatose. The battle continues and eventually Naruto kicks the bad guy's ass and teaches him the meaning of Christmas. Well, okay, not really but close enough. The bad guy repents and as a final act of contrition, uses all of his remaining life energy to bring back all of those who have died in one giant squishy dues ex machina.
Now, the dick of it is that because Tsunade didn't actually die, she's the only person who's basically been clusterfucked by this encounter. If she hadn't been as resilient and strong and simply succumbed, she'd be doing just fine. Of course, if she had been the protagonist and had godly superpowers like Naruto, she would have survived as well. Instead, because she was better than average and planned ahead with her regenerative powers, she gets boned.
It got me thinking that this is exactly like the mortgage crisis we face now. If you are of Naruto calibur (read: filthy rich) then things don't really affect you all that much. If you were weak or stupid, buying a home that you couldn't really afford or making dumbass choices like getting an adjustable mortgage and just assume you could keep refinancing, the government will bail you out and 'bring you back to life' just like those crushed by Pain. Of course, if you were one of those responsible chumps who were fiscally responsible in either never buying in the first place or buying something within your means, you sort of get boned just like Tsunade. She probably wishes she had just died like the others and thus could be brought back with no downside. Instead, even if she does survive the amount of energy she spent to maintain her regenerative powers will severely reduce her remaining lifespan. It's not just a dick move, it's a double dick move.
In this end, this is why I hate bailouts and dues ex machina. It just doesn't seem fair that the least deserving assholes out there are the ones who get the help. The ones who might actually deserve it are usually doing just well enough because of planning and forethought that no one wants to give them anything to begin with.
So what do you think? Should I teach a class called Naruto and economic theory?

| dealing with parents is like walking in a minefield |

Dose anyone know the best way to address parents who yell at there kids in the library. I don't want to confront them in front of there kids so I usually just politely ask them to to keep it down and if it happens again I tell them that if they don't think there children can behave in the library they would be better off checking out books and bringing them home for the kids (even though the majority of them are just here for the computers). But today, there was a patron who I have had this issue with a few times before and she will yell at her son completely pointless things like today he dropped a book by accident and his Mother yelled at him to pick it up and then went on to yell at him about how worthless his father is. The boy had done nothing wrong, and I didn't want it to sound like I was blaming him, I ended up suggesting that in the future she goes to the Main branch which is more kid friendly. She just gave me this look like she was disgusted that I would say anything to her, and said "do you have kids" I said "no, I'm just trying to make sure the library stays quiet for everyone else" she just laughed at me, and I said "please try and keep the noise to a minimum" which sounded stupid and a few minutes later she left.
dose any one have any advice for when this happens in the future? I know people get very sensitive when there children are involved. Out side of working at my University library this is my first Library job and I want to do well so when I apply to the MLS program I can have good references, but even my supervisor treats me like a little kid. On top looking like I'm still in high school being white makes look like I don't belong even more. HELP!!!

The man gave me a link to a promising job website if I wish to look for something on a university level that is more tied to my, thus far, useless masters.
Saw an ad that was interesting looking, but upon reading the description I must admit I have no idea what the job is actually about. That one was in VA ^^;
Saw another that fits my profile a little better and might make for a nice starting position... IF they decided to take a chance on someone with no experience 9_9 The only problem with THIS one is it's in Indiana... and that isn't exactly where I wanted to relocate to --; But I guess I can send them a note and see if they want to take a gamble on me (not likely that I'll get this anyway with no experience). The pay isn't fantastic either... the low end is about what I'd make as a first year teacher in most nothern states, and the high end is right about where my salary was when I left DoDDS ... so we're not talking about anything special...
But low stress job, in higher education might make the low pay worth it...
The funny thing is, the university that I went to for my masters is STILL using my portfolio as an example of excellent work... I guess I can play up that angle... Suppose I should contact one of my old professors too and see if they will vouch for me...
I dunno, gotta think about how I want to work this one... I'll probably spend a ton of time on it and get nothing in return... seems to be the way this whole job search is going... (and that goes for me AND my husband, his luck is just as rotten as mine and I have the added benefit of being a citizen with more education ;p )
Should have just gotten MS Network Certification and taken some courses in computer repair... I SWEAR that would have made me more money than this masters. Still stewing over being denied certification as an ET. That was the biggest pile of bullshit evar.
